All Restylane fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the skin that can hold many times its weight in water and works fabulously to help restore facial volume and smooth lines and wrinkles.
Refyne and Defyne are made with the latest technology, XpresHAn™, which blends the HA particles in a way that lets the filler move more naturally with your facial expressions. While your injectable provider’s skill matters most in achieving an effective, natural-looking result, Refyne and Defyne are designed to help avoid the stiff or unnatural feeling that can sometimes occur with deeper filler injections in parts of the face that move frequently and dynamically.
Refyne and Defyne are very similar products, with slightly different consistencies. Defyne is slightly thicker and therefore can be injected a little more deeply to treat more severe folds (it may help to think the “D” in Defyne stands for “deep”).

Our plastic surgeons and PA/RN providers use a very thin, short needle to inject the filler, which is infused with the mild anesthetic lidocaine to enhance comfort. Most patients experience a brief pinching sensation and pressure during treatment. Numbing cream may be used to help with discomfort.

Restylane Refyne/Defyne both typically last about 9 to 12 months. However, everyone is different. Some patients are happy with their results for longer than a year, while others choose to repeat treatment more frequently.
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane products, are safely absorbed by the body and metabolized and eliminated naturally over time. If you’re interested in a filler that will last longer than 12 months, you may consider Sculptra.
