It’s official: fall is here! And while you may be dreaming of your next pumpkin spice latte or the smell of an apple pie baking, you can also enjoy typical fall treats and scents in your beauty routine. Check out some of our favorite DIY fall facials.
1. Pumpkin Facial
Pumpkins are useful for much more than fall decorations and sweet treats! A natural miracle-worker on your skin, pumpkin not only contains high levels of vitamins A and C (known to build up collagen levels), it’s also loaded with exfoliating enzymes that rid your skin of dead cells, leaving it soft and smooth.
Here’s what to do: In a large bowl, mix a few tablespoons of pumpkin puree with a few tablespoons of organic honey, half of a tablespoon of avocado oil, a drop of carrot seed oil, a drop of sandalwood oil, and, if you’re wanting to wake up all of your senses, add a small dash of pumpkin pie spice. Refrigerate for half an hour before applying generous amount to your face, avoiding contact with your eyes and mouth. Let the pumpkin mixture sit for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Pat dry with a soft towel.
2. Honey Cinnamon Face Mask
Honey and cinnamon are delicious, but did you know these delectable ingredients also have skin boosting properties? Honey has natural moisturizing power, plus antibacterial agents that can help combat acne and congested skin. When honey is combined with fragrant cinnamon, which has anti-inflammatory properties and is loaded with powerful antioxidants, they become quite the team!
Get the recipe: In a small bowl, mix ¼ tablespoon of organic honey with ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon. Put the mixture on the areas of your face you want to treat, leaving it for a few hours up to overnight if you have a particularly pesky pimple. Rinse the mixture off with warm water and dry your face with a clean towel.
3. Apple Face Pack for Sensitive Skin
You know what they say, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Like pumpkins, apples are plentiful right now and are great for your skin! Apples are rich in vitamin C which can help improve your skin’s elasticity. They also contain high levels of vitamin A, perfect for ridding you of dead skin cells by encouraging new growth. This sweet fruit also contains copper, which helps increase melanin production (melanin is a natural sunscreen, protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays). Thus apples make for an easy facial, and the natural components are great for sensitive skin.
Follow these instructions: Boil a small apple for a few minutes, peel off the skin when it’s soft, and smash the apple using a fork. Add a teaspoon of banana paste and a teaspoon of fresh cream, mixing them together well with the apple. Apply generously to your face and let sit for about 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, pat dry with a towel, and voilà—refreshed skin!
4. Nutmeg Acne Exfoliating Facial
There’s a long list of skin-benefits associated with nutmeg. Whether you have oily, acne-prone skin or flaky, dry skin, nutmeg may be helpful. Nutmeg has anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to being astringent and antibacterial, which makes it a great weapon to have in your arsenal. It also is used to treat eczema, as its exfoliating properties are great for nourishing the underlying layers of skin. This nutmeg exfoliating facial is super simple to make and use during the fall months when your skin could use a little extra TLC.
Give it a try: Simply mix half a tablespoon of nutmeg with a tablespoon of organic whole milk in a small bowl. Massage your face and neck with the mixture in a circular, upwards motion with gentle pressure. Exfoliate for 5 minutes and rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.
