Lip fillers are the go-to solution for fuller, more defined lips. But while these popular treatments offer stunning results that boost your confidence for months, they’re not a permanent solution. So, you’re in good company if you’re wondering how to make lip fillers last longer.
Below, our lip filler insiders offer essential tips and address common factors that may impact the longevity of your luscious lips. Misperceptions about lip fillers abound, so keep scrolling to learn how to maintain your perfectly plump pout for the long haul!
What To Do Before Lip Fillers
What to do—and what not to do before lip fillers—affects your experience and results. For example, we’re often asked questions like:
- Can I drink coffee before a lip filler appointment?
- Can I take Tylenol before getting lip fillers?
- What if I drank alcohol before lip filler?
We’ve got you covered. During your consultation, our experienced injectors will give you the lowdown on what to avoid before lip fillers and share detailed aftercare instructions. Keep the following in mind in the days leading up to your lip filler appointment for a safe and successful outcome:
DO:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water ahead of your treatment.
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals to support skin health.
- Get a good night’s sleep so you’re comfortable and well-rested before treatment.
- Have realistic expectations about what lip fillers can and can’t accomplish.
- Arrive at our medical spa with a blank canvas (aka, a clean, makeup-free face).
DON’T
- Consume alcohol 24 hours before your visit. It may increase bruising and swelling.
- Fuel your coffee fix before lip filler. Caffeinated beverages may increase dehydration and swelling.
- Take blood-thinning medications or supplements the week before treatment (unless medically necessary). They may also increase your risk of bruising and swelling.
- Schedule facial treatments like chemical peels or HydraFacial® MD a week before your appointment.
Again, while everyone varies, these general guidelines set you up for a successful experience and outcome.
What To Avoid After Lip Fillers
Your actions after lip filler treatment also impact the quality and longevity of your results. Be mindful of the following to preserve your pout:
- Don’t apply lipsticks and glosses until 24 hours after fillers—after that, it’s OK to use makeup to accentuate your new look.
- Avoid catching rays after treatment because UV rays may negatively interact with HA-based fillers and break them down faster.
- Steer clear of hot environments like saunas and steam rooms to reduce the risk of additional swelling.
- Resist the urge to touch or press your lips after treatment. Doing so can cause the filler to migrate and affect the outcome of your results.
- Skip intense workouts for at least 24 to 48 hours. Too much blood flow may increase swelling and alter your results.
- Say no to smoking after lip filler. Pursing your lips while smoking may increase the risk of migration and dry out your skin, among other concerns.
- Limit alcohol a week or two after lip filler, as excessive drinking can lead to dehydration and potentially accelerate filler breakdown.
Moderation is key. While having one cocktail or taking one aspirin isn’t likely to affect filler longevity, going overboard can interfere with your results. On the flip side, if patients visit us because they’re unhappy with previous lip filler results, we can remove HA-based filler quickly and safely with hyaluronidase.
