At La Jolla Cosmetic Medical Spa, we love trying out our treatments before we recommend them to clients. It gives us a chance not only to train on each other but also to enjoy the fabulous results! Most importantly, though, it helps us understand what it’s really like to undergo a treatment so we can advise our clients on exactly what to expect each step of the way.
That’s exactly why we couldn’t wait to give miraDry a try when it arrived at our medical spa in San Diego. miraDry is a non-invasive procedure that heats and destroys sweat glands in the armpits to reduce excessive sweating and odor with little to no downtime. We heard amazing things about it, so we couldn’t wait to be guinea pigs.
In this blog post, a few of our staff members share what it was really like to experience miraDry, what they wish they had known beforehand, and whether they would recommend it to anyone thinking about giving it a go!

Why did you decide to try miraDry?
I was our first miraDry “guinea pig” during our provider training. Since I am a Sweaty Betty, I was the first one to raise my hand when they asked for volunteers. The treatment was totally tolerable. You get injections for numbing the armpits, and then the treatment feels almost completely painless. A few times, I had some “hot spots” for a few seconds, but nothing unbearable. The good news is that the numbing process has evolved a lot since 2017 when I had my treatment, and today most patients don’t feel anything except the pulling of your skin into the miraDry wand.
How do you feel about your results?
I love my results! I’m a Sweaty Betty no longer… and I have almost zero underarm hair now! It was a great side benefit of the procedure.
Is there anything you wish you’d known before your treatment?
Since I was patient #1 in our practice, we didn’t know much about what would happen after the procedure. Here’s my advice:
- I wore an underwire bra the next day to work. Not recommended, LOL. Since there is swelling after the procedure, I encourage women to have a soft bra or tank top with built-in bra for the day of treatment as well as for the next few days.
- As the numbing wears off (usually a few hours after treatment), your armpits will feel hot. I suggest the following:
- Have 4 small gel ice packs ready to go for after the numbing wears off. You can rotate between 2 under your arms and 2 in the freezer.
- Stay ahead of the pain on the afternoon/night after your treatment—meaning, take some Tylenol before things get too uncomfortable. The only hotness I felt was the night of the treatment. The next morning, I had no pain, just swelling, which is totally normal.

Why did you decide to try miraDry?
Excessive perspiration.
What did your treatment feel like?
Your underarms are numbed before the procedure so you don’t feel anything at all.
How do you feel about your results?
Hands down the best procedure I’ve ever done. It changed my life and my wardrobe!
Is there anything you wish you’d known before your treatment?
For a few days after miraDry, you should not wear deodorant in order for your body to purge any remaining odors and sweat. The purge is pretty stinky but manageable. Keep some organic lavender disinfectant spray nearby and you’ll be fine. Underarms contain bacteria, which is transferred to your deodorant/antiperspirant, so it is suggested to buy a brand new one after the purge (if you even need one)!

Why did you decide to try miraDry?
Odor issue.
What did your treatment feel like?
I personally have a high pain tolerance; however, I think this treatment would be relatively easy for anyone to experience. The provider injects lidocaine for numbing, which will feel like tiny bee stings the first or second round, but you will feel nothing once they start the infusion process, which is needed to puff up the armpit area for treatment.
How do you feel about your results?
I did see some significant results, but I still have a little odor, so I have not completely given up relying on my deodorant. I did have my 2 treatments spaced far apart, so this could have contributed to the results.
Is there anything you wish you’d known before your treatment?
I was really educated by the provider for my treatment, so I feel like I was really prepared for all the tricks to expect for post-care. They also prepared me for the fact that I would be walking like a T-Rex with my puffy arms, and that to help the inflammation, I should ice consistently and take Ibuprofen.
